Never got it to work, and, poor support. July 28, 2010 docira@yahoo.com Would not work given the instructions, and I have some IT experience.
Called the help line and waited 25 minutes. Spoke to three people on two different occasions for a period of almost two hours. They blamed everything from my computer to the ISP to my lack of understanding. None of the people I spoke with really seemed to understand the hardware or software, they just referred to and read from scripts.
Horrible experience. Returned for refund.
A nice upgrade for aging equipment July 20, 2010 David L. Farquhar (St. Louis, Missouri (USA)) I purchased one of these a year ago to replace an aging Speedstream modem and Linksys router. It does a better job of holding a connection than any other modem I've owned in the last 10 years. And every couple of months or so the Linksys would just act goofy and I'd have to cycle the power to get it to behave again. I've never had to do that with this box.
It's smaller than either my old modem or router was, yet it replaces both of them. I appreciate the space savings.
I also found that on my questionable phone line, I get better performance out of this modem than I did out of older ones. Performance varies based on line conditions, but it's consistently a 100K-200K faster than my old modems could ever manage.
Now, for the bad. I wasn't very impressed with its wireless, but admittedly I've never been able to get any wireless device to work well in my house. My Linksys was a little bit better in that regard. I finally gave up and just ran Ethernet to where I wanted computers.
The device does run hot, but I keep it in my basement and that seems to help. So far, the heat hasn't affected the device's reliability.
And yes, as others have said, the unit's browser interface is primitive. But the only times I've had to access it were to set it up initially, and to check its status when I was curious about the speed I was getting. It's adequate for that, so I don't worry about that very much.
I don't regret the purchase, and recommend it without hesitation to anyone who needs to replace an old DSL modem.
Well Worth The Investment June 12, 2010 J. Wong (Stockton, CA) I have used several DSL modems. This one was easy to setup. I wish it came with more in-depth instructions. The unit does get warm, so use a small fan.
Does what it is supposed to do June 6, 2010 Yves Konigshofer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this to replace a different DSL/router (a 2Wire purchased from my ISP) that kept crashing (about half the time, it crashed when visiting amazon.com, of all places). Since installing the D-Link DSL-2640B, my connection has become a lot more robust and it also works well with my 3G microcell.
Setup was relatively easy and not much had to be changed from the default DSL settings. There are a lot of DSL-related settings, but you will probably not have to change the majority of them. Those that were important for my ISP were presented right at the start (obtain these from your ISP before installing).
Before purchasing this product, keep in mind that it is a wireless 802.11g access point. If most of your file transfers are downloads from the internet, then this may be all you need because 802.11g is faster than any DSL you are presently likely to encounter (the modem itself supports 24Mbps downstream and 3.5Mbps upsteam over DSL). If you transfer a lot of data between computers at your home or have a large area to cover, then you may want to look into getting a similar device that supports 802.11n.
One thing missing appears to be the ability to assign an IP address to a particular device on your network based on its MAC.
A Good, Easy To Setup Modem/Router May 21, 2010 DukeFan (Charlotte, NC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this product to replace the cheap little DSL modem that AT&T provided with their service, and the D-Link Wireless DIR-615 N Router, 4-Port 10/100 Switch, 2 Antennas, Draft 802.11n which has been very reliably handling my home wireless network for the past three years. This unit was very easy to set up. All I had to do was transfer the phone connection from the old modem to the D-Link modem (it configured itself within a couple of minutes and all the panel lights glowed a vibrant green), log into it using the default router address, and enter the wireless settings for my existing network.
I am writing this review from a laptop that is connected wirelessly to the router from two rooms away, and the computer in the upstairs game room normally connects at a clean 54mbps.
The router does get warm, but not unusually so, and so far no connections have been dropped. My only regret is that I couldn't find a reasonably priced 802.11N combo unit, which is what my old DIR-615 supports. Someone else will be enjoying that 100mbps baby as soon as I can unload it.
If you are a network novice, you may have a little difficulty setting this unit up by relying on the Quick Install Guide, especially if you are setting up a new network. However, it can be done, so find someone to help you who knows networks! The Quick Install Guide is the only reason this unit gets 4 instead of 5 stars.
