15 minutes of downtime every other day July 15, 2010 d51 This router is great, and does everything it says it will... until you enable an IPSEC VPN.
Purchased 2 of these, both of them would become unresponsive for about 15 minutes at a time if you enabled the IPSEC VPN feature (the reason I purchased this router). The unresponsiveness could be reduced down to a less than a minute if you disable the IPSEC VPN, but that's the reason I purchased the router.
Went back and forth with Zyxel support for months, even received a replacement which didn't solve our problems.
Don't buy this router if you need to use the IPSEC VPN feature.
Dissatisfied at this slow performer. May 27, 2010 techside (Philly, PA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
The X-550n does not broadcast in 5Ghz range, it is not dual band, so my laptop cannot negotiate the advertised 300Mbps speed, under OSX I got 144mbps and on win7 I got 130mbps when standing over the router. I updated the firmware and set everything up then went to connect to my other computer's screen and it took an order of magnitude longer to negotiate the connection (using screen sharing between macs, AFP protocol I guess). File transfer over wireless was no faster than wireless G speed of my netgear wgr614v9 that the X550n was intended to replace despite one machine having negotiated a gigabit link and the laptop connection status stating 144 or 130mbps. I didn't try out wired connection speeds, I don't care. This router fails so miserably on wireless that I didn't get that far. I read the review on Tom's Hardware and was sold, but I feel like I bought a lemon and I'm shipping it back. Also, I can't connect using WPA, only WPA2. The max transfer I could get was about 3 to 4MB/s over wireless. The wireless G is giving me about 2 to 3MB/s. I am disappoint. Get ready amazon, I am sending this clunker back to you!
Great router so far April 20, 2010 Kerry Nietz 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Recently we changed internet providers from one that required no router to one that does. A piece of technology like a router is important enough that I did some research ahead of time. I wanted the most features for the best price, of course. Most importantly, though, a router needs to be reliable.
Unfortunately, the problem with researching routers is that every one of them will have a fair sample of people who love it, some that think it is passable and a handful of seriously negative reviews, along the lines of: I can't even use it as a footrest!
So it was with some trepidation that I chose this router for my setup.
Thankfully, after nearly a month of "always on" use I can say that the x550N has fulfilled my expectations. The setup was fairly straigthforward (though the complete newbie might need a hand), the reliability is great, the wireless coverage is superb (router is in the basement, but I can surf on my laptop, in a closed room, on our second story.) and surfing performance is great. I can even play xbox live now.
Great router. Buy without hesitation.
Zyxel Router - Average User March 18, 2010 R Michaels (Smyrna, TN USA) After using a different router I purchased the Zyxel router because the modem was also a Zyxel. This unit met all the specifications I required and has a very extensive manual. The set up was so easy I was up and running in a matter of minutes. The performance has been excellent. If you are looking for an exceptional router, I strongly recommend this product.
Excellent Choice March 16, 2010 William S. Farra (Aliquippa, PA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When my Linksys G wireless router gave up the ghost, I spent a considerable amount of time researching the best one to replace it. I had never heard of ZyXEL but I was impressed by the majority of the reviews. It's rather difficult coming to a firm decision on a device such as this because every one has reviews that think it's the best thing since sliced bread and reviews that utter stark warnings that this device will ruin your life.
The installation went very smoothly in all respects. With the Linksys I was never able to set up a wireless LAN but with the ZyXEL it was a piece of cake. One of the main things I was after in buying the ZyXEL was a longer range of coverage for wireless. Our office is a 3 storey brick building with a large addition on the main floor and a basement. Not only does this wireless router reach all corners of our office but also two houses away from the office. And the increase in internet speed of 'n' technology is dramatic.
It's worked consistently for nearly a month now, and I'm hopeful for a nice long run.
