Good Router June 16, 2010 Allan Clarke (Austin, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this router after looking at the top routers by others (DLink, Netgear, Cisco). I like to look at the low ratings first when I buy equipment and see common failings reported for multiple buyers. The others had lots of problems with respect to lack of customer service, reliability, and others. I started ranking routers strictly by rating and stumbled across the TrendNet routers. I'll add that my older wired Netgear was beginning to fail, so I needed a replacement.
I'm a technical person (electrical engineer and software developer). This router was very easy to set up; I did not use the provided disk. I just plugged the WAN cable in, the LAN cables to the clients, and powered it up. I browsed into the standard HTTP address for the router. I saw the LAN side was active, but nothing on the WAN (internet) side. I realized I had forgotten to reset the cable modem, so I cycled its power and up everything came.
Just walking through the user interface shown in the browser was easy. I only messed with features that I needed. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz radios can be powered on and off independently (a nice way to keep my teens with their laptops off the internet). I also added entries to the URL filter (blocked sites and blocked content).
I have had it up for a week or so with no problems whatsoever. I did notice that my iPod touch now can receive a signal all the way at my master bedroom (75 feet away with only a single door in between). I believe that the 5GHz signal is more easily blocked by walls and such, so your mileage may vary.
I have not tried hooking up streaming video, nor do I have a previous wireless router to compare speeds to.
Not bad for what it does, however May 13, 2010 Albert K. Wang (SF, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This puppy is easy to set up, just don't go too crazy on all its options. Befoer you try to configure it. One STRONG recommendation, go to TRENDNET website to upgrade to the latest firmware. Don't forget to reset your cable modem if is you are using the cable modem as internet connection. I notice a lot of review talk about wi-fi side of speed. I noticed something interesting is if you turn both 802.11G/N on, the throughput performance on the uplink to the internet side gets affected. It is not by much, around ~5%. Since I don't own other brand of N routers, I'm not sure if others had even bigger effect on the uplink side. Overall, I would give a 5 stars if it wasn't the performance degredation. It may address this issue in the next firmware release. I had it for few weeks now. It is still humming I have turn off the N for now for its max performance until I have N device like an IPAD..(-9
too loose power adapter tip, can't work reliably May 10, 2010 Hemal (Sunnyvale CA USA) I ordered this router, and the first thing I noticed is the power adapter tip is too loose, so much that even touching the router would cause it to lose power connection. The setup was easy, however, I lost internet connection right after that. After trying for a while, figured that the cable modem required a reboot. I called up amazon about the power tip problem and they sent me a replacement. Unfortunately, even this unit had the same problem. After that, I returned the unit and got Cisco Linksys E2000 and that proved my decision was right.
Bottomline, if you want to live with a loose power tip and the trouble of returning two units and about 2-3 weeks time in the process, you may get this router. Else, you may look elsewhere.
300 is goood May 4, 2010 Jeremy S. Rouse This worked out perfectly. I live in a long ranch style place and the router is literally at the far end and my bedroom is at the other end of the house. Excellent conectivity, easy to set up , and I get a good connection in the backyard.
Great router, perfect for saturated airspace April 12, 2010 Ashar Ilyas I'm in a highly saturated airspace with numerous networks nearby so I lost signal every other day which became frustrating. Decided to use dual band to keep signal consistent and after a month with this dual band router, I have yet to experience even one drop. Fantastic headache relief. If only my cell phone carrier was this consistent!
