Product Description Easily add secure storage to your networkNow you can quickly and easily add storage space onto your network with the Linksys Network Storage System. This stand-alone network appliance features two available SATA hard drive bays so you can attach as much storage as you need now, and add more later as your storage needs grow. For even more expandability, there are two USB ports that let you connect readily available USB 2.0 hard drives for even more storage space -- or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way of accessing your portable data files. Connecting the Storage System to your network is simple -- just plug it directly into an available 10/100 Ethernet port on your router or switch, and the storage is instantly accessible by your whole network. The Network Storage System features built-in one-touch backup -- just push the button to start a backup of your important files. There are other built-in disk utilities, accessible through your web browser. You can run a self test or scan the disk(s) for errors. If you've installed a second disk drive, you can back up one drive to the other, either manually or on a schedule. For even more flexibility and utility, the Network Storage System can be set up to be accessible directly from the Internet via a web browser or FTP. Files can be available publicly, or create password-protected accounts for your authorized users. Slow but streams good June 10, 2010 Andrew W. Coleman (Landstuhl, GE) PRO:
- Easy to setup
- No other software needed
- Shares are easy to setup
- Permissions are easy to setup
- Good streaming speed (I use it to store TV series and then stream them to my media center PCs)
- Have had no problems from power outages
CON:
- Transferring files to and from the NAS is slow. I can transfer the same file to another computer on the network much faster
- Fans are noisy but not bad
- Slow bootup
Conclusion:
It is a keeper for storage and streaming.
Don't buy this product. May 3, 2010 E. Houk (Sylvania, OH) This product is a disgrace and Linksys should never have put this product out. I was looking for a NAS solution for a small business, this is not the solution. The hard drives ran very very hot. I am concerned that this shortened the lives of the hard drives I put in. They were so hot, I was concerned it would become a fire hazard. The NAS was unreachable half the time. There is no easy way to map the NAS through windows without running their software. Account management was less functional than I hoped. I sent this product back.
SLOW slow slow and loud loud loud March 24, 2010 Mark Twain Clumsy install. Formatting a 1TB disk times out and you have to start over.
The fan is LOUD! Way louder than a gaming PC.
And it is slow. 20 hours to copy 200GB! Unacceptable.
Keep your expectiations realistic March 22, 2010 R. Jones (Stow, OH United States) I bought two of these units...one for my home office LAN, where my wife and I use it for backups and file transfers, and another for the office and warehouse at my wife's mailorder business, as a bridge solution until we get a proper server infrastructure built later this year.
Setup was quick and easy. The browser-based interface simplifies administration and navigation, so I didn't have to do a lot of hand-holding while the office staff learned how to use it. While it's not as fast an flexible as a more advanced device, it does everything I need for much less money than other products on the market.
My only substantive gripe is that the built-in admin tool only seems to work reliably in Internet Explorer and both at home and at the warehouse, we use Firefox as our default browser. Other than that, I'm happy with the purchase and I'd recommend it for anyone needing inexpensive and simple to use network-based storage.
Nas200 Transfer speed SLOW!!!!! February 11, 2010 Anthony George I am very disappointed in the product! Wish I had done some research before buying it, But with a trusted name like Linksys thought I didn't have too. First off, the transfer speeds are extremely SLOW!!! It would take you days or weeks to upload movies and music since you have to do it over the network. The NIC is only 10/100, but even with that you still only get about 3MB/s max!!! It has 2 slots for internal hard-drives but you cannot copy directly from one to the other! You cannot copy external USB directly to the hard-drives, you must do it over the NET and map drives. You think is too slow and want to connect the hard-drive to you PC to transfer files? Forget about, since the hard-drive is formatted to only read the NAS! Transferring files is unsafe over the NET since it only support FTP! Trying to remote in over the NET using [...] is the ultimate challenge, good luck with that! The device is not 100% bad. It do have some features like, UPNP and remote access, but there are others that are better, faster, safer and has more features. Do some research before buying one!
