5 out of 5 stars This Really Works   August 28, 2010
ROBERT E. FOWLER (AMARILLO, TX USA)
Hi,

I just purchased the Drobo-FS with 3 Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 64 MB drives. I had two old 80GB drives sitting around and I tossed those in to just to see if this thing would do what they advertised and BEHOLD, this little black "toaster" box seems to really work!

Drobo box packaging was pretty neat, black inside and the toaster had its own black cover. Setup went okay. Instead of hooking up directly to the network, I had connect the toaster directly to a PC and assign a static IP since I don't use DNS.

Dashboard software seems to work pretty good, interface is okay, but would like to see it worked on a little more.

One thing that is somewhat hidden is the included backup software. After the dashboard is installed, right click the new icon in the system tray and select "DroboCopy Settings". Software is pretty straight forward and works quite well. Only thing I would like to see is the ability to implement backups of other computers over the network and one other thing. The backup software only allows you to select one folder or file to backup per set, you are unable to "menu" it out - that needs to be fixed. Were it not for these two things, I could toss away my old backup software.

One thing I am excited about is the ability to design your own "Private Cloud". The Drobo has its own "App Store" as it were and one item that is going to be available soon is the ability to implement your own cloud through "Oxygen Cloud", a cloud broker. IPads, iPhones, PC's and iMac's will all be able to access data from anywhere with an Internet connection and you will be able to backup your on site Drobo to another off site Drobo - way too cool! Think the Beta is coming in the fall - see [...].

Only thing this box needs is two slots in the top - wonder how the toast would come out.

Get One!

Easy to setup up. Easy to add drives. Automatically updated itself. So far everything is working great.

Transfers may be a little slow, but I haven't had time to test anything.

5 out of 5 stars DroboFS is Awesome!   August 3, 2010

I originally purchased this when my external drive failed and I almost lost all my photographs. Once I got this thing with 3 1.5 TB drives I don't have to worry about that anymore and I also have room to expand! I added all my photos, backed up my entire laptop(Apple) with Time Machine, added all my music, and have tons of room to spare. I also added all my MP3 library to it and installed a Drobo app to share it out via iTunes. Maybe later I'll get a couple Sonos players to stream the music around the house!

I used to have a nice raid setup but they are expensive and not as flexible to expand. If you are looking for a good backup solution this thing is awesome! You literally plug it in to your router then install the Drobo Dashboard on your computer. It will find your DroboFS with out any network setup. I'm not sure if there is any setup when your not using DHCP but if you don't know what DHCP is then you're most likely using it so don't worry about it as routers come with DHCP on by default. If you did disable DHCP then you're probably versed enough in network setup to figure it out.

Once the Drobo Dashboard sees your DroboFS you can change the admin password and start setting up shares. Setup is super simple, you just go into the admin tool and click the '+' button to add a new share or add new users. Once you have users and shares you can setup which users have access to which shares. Some users you can setup to only have read access and others can have read/write access. You can even make things available read-only to anyone which is nice for somethings. This might sound fairly complex but the interface makes it pretty simple.

If you are wondering weather this data appliance is worth it... I think it is! I'm not sure it would be fast enough as a primary data drive but I'm not using it for that. If you want super fast then shell out the $$$ for a super fast redundant raid setup. Drobo is definitely the most cost effective and safe storage out there!

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with CrashPlan (as of July 2010)   August 1, 2010
Christopher (Northern California)
I bought the Drobo-FS to provide storage for CrashPlan network backup software; for several computers in our home, and for family members out on the Internet.

Unfortunately, CrashPlan (as of July 2010, under Mac OS X) doesn't see the Drobo-FS. CrashPlan sees only directly attached drives. Back to the drawing board! (I'm going to try a Drobo-S attached directly to a Mac mini next.)

In researching the problem after the fact, I found a thread suggesting that Lightroom and Aperture also can't use network drives like the FS either.

The enclosure was a bit white noisy, and I found I wanted to shut it down at night. It does put the drives to sleep after a user-settable interval, reducing power consumption to about 15 W, but it never turns off (or slows down) the fan, which is the source of most of the noise.

On the plus side, the intake vents were all on the front face, and the exhaust vent on the back face (where most of the noise came out), so I was able to sandwich the enclosure within a row of manuals on a bookshelf, reducing the noise noticeably, without impairing airflow. (Of course, being a network drive, I could have put it in another room entirely!)

I have a lot of good things to say about the Drobo-FS, and give it 4 stars overall, but I thought the problems I experienced were worth mentioning here.

5 out of 5 stars The best data robot on the market!   July 24, 2010
PAUL J. LACAPRIA (Orange County California)
Just installed this Drobo FS into a customer network. Fantastic product! Anyone can install and set up. Even creating private file shares (up to 32) is easy. I loaded it with Five Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive (WD20EARS). One of the drives out of the box went DOA within just a half hour of plugging it in. The Drobo FS marked the drive as bad. Since I configured the Drobo FS with Duel Drive Redundancy, I pulled a second drive out to see how long it would take to rebuild the drive parity across just three drives. Not bad at all. Took about 10 minutes to restripe. There was not much data on the robot at the time, but this was an acceptable rebuild time. You need to install the desktop software that comes with the Drobo FS onto each workstation that will access the data robot. Easy to install and understand. Straight forward software design. Creating private shares is easy also. You can have total control over who see's what and who has access to other people's private shares. Each private share is password protected. Logging into the desktop software mounts the private shares created for each user. Public shares seem to mount regardless. Only one problem. There does seem to be a known software bug with mounting the private shares on a desktop reboot. It should mount them automatically without user intervention. But for some unknown reason, the private shares won't mount by themselves on reboot or log out log in. Regardless of OS version running. Data Robotics is working on a solution and I'm confident they will fix it soon and release a patch for their desktop software. For now, the work around seems to be that you need to log out of the Drobo FS client software and just log back in. Then all the private shares will mount. I'm sure a fix will be just around the corner. Other than that, the product has been flawless. Even when the replacement drive showed up, we just plugged it in and the Drobo FS re-stripped the entire drive array to include all five drives. This also happened very quickly. I'm very happy with the duel drive redundancy feature. This is a fantastic idea! My only desire at this point is to see a Data Robotics Drobo FS work with a Pogo Plug VPN solution. Then my world would rock! Great product! Runs circles around anything else I've seen to date!
