DON'T BUY THIS! June 15, 2010 E. Hodne This device does nothing it claims it can do. It is so full of bugs and can not proccess the video it claims. It does have an HDMI port and this is why I bought it, but it comes no where near the 1080i that it claims. First off, I got it out of the box and the remote was not working. Changed batteries and still nothing. Hit it with my hand then it worked for a couple weeks and then it stopped, again it wasn't the batteries. If I squeezed the remote it would work for a while again, must be a cracked solder joint or loose connection inside. When i called tech assist they told me to buy a new one. The other major problem, the video! The whole reason I bought this thing. This thing is horrible when connected to a network, so i thought I would keep backups of my movies on a usb hard drive. This only works I the video is low quality. I had to convert all my videos to a bitrate below 1024 and a resolution of 720x480. I wanted to return this thing, but D-link only will exchange it, no refunds. So all I'll get is another piece of junk. I ordered the new "Western Digital WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Player WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN". It's about $70 cheaper and has really positive reviews unlike the DSM-510.
Why are all the bad reviews? October 6, 2009 Hy (Loveland, CO) I bought this device from Circuit city in May 2008 for approximately $79 (yes you read it right; seventy nine), no wonder they went out of business. I have had this device for almost a year and half now and I have greatly enjoyed it. First I tried to set it up using its wireless features and it sure found my router and it was on the network in few minutes. When I streamed music it was fine but I when I streamed video, the stuttering happened and I opted for a wired solution. I had to buy an ethernet powerline adapter and hooked the DSM-510 straight to the adapter using a good quality Cat-6 Ethernet cable. I haven't had any problem since then! The DSM-510 is a great device, I use it with Tversity pro (it's completely free) and it tracscodes everything on the fly without a hitch. I also use it with a Buffalo Linskstation Live and everything works perfect. I upgraded the firmware a couple of times when I first bought it and it has been working flawless. I believe all the negative reviews are due to technical incompetency. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this little wonder! I would definitely but it again if I were given a second chance at $79
If you want to stream videos wirelessly, there are new devices in the market now, that uses wireless N capabilities and due to the fact that it can transfer 270mb/Sec, you will be able to stream videos wirelessly without stuttering. However, it comes with a high price tag. of $230 (Look at Mediagate products)
you get what you buy April 9, 2009 Manuel Szulanski (Buenos Aires, Argentina) The product works great.
Installing the product requieres some advance knowledge about networks and computers. It integrates gretly with windows media player 11, wich makes it easier, though the original manual and firmware wich it comes with doesn't says anything about it.
D-Link Support, as always, doesn't help much.
As a player it works flawlessly. The down side is on the networking hand, requierd bandwith for 720p is too high for 802.11G, but for divx dvd it's ok.
So if you are planning on watching HD contect make sure you have a wired connection. I think this problem, for this price, D-Link should have added a disk drive or at least a memory buffer big enough to play HD content. Unfortunately for d-link, for the same price there are many other better products than this one. I Bought it couse I'm a D-Link fan and never had a problem with their routers, but now I'll reconsider my position on non-routers products.
Great potential... November 30, 2008 James Wire (Stranded In, Iowa United States) The DSM 510 is really a great concept and works pretty well. Wired network hookup was straight forward and easy to accomplish. It quickly found my Windows Home Server and all of the media on it. If there are any weaknesses they are the lack of sorting options and the remote arrow keys producing multiple responses.
As expected the device will not work with my DVI-I input on my monitor with an HDMI to DVI-I cable, for now the composite output is acceptable. If I had it to do over I would get the DSM 520 which also has component video output.
It is wonderful September 9, 2008 G. Jin (PA USA) It works like a charm. Easy setup..use TVersity for everything.
My system:
computer: Dell I530 quad 2.4(not a VIIV!). Install TVersity.
Router: Verizon MI424-WR. Connection: wireless.
TV: Sceptre X42, connected by HDMI.
Smooth run, no stuttering. Have not figured out continuous run for files in a video album yet......
BTW, I didnt buy it from Amazon..it was from CC, on sale about $52 bucks.
