Product Description
Expand The Range Of Your Wireless Network!

Expand the range of your wireless network! The Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander is the easy way to increase the effective coverage of your wireless network.

Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the Wireless-G Range Expander does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router, and it "bounces" the signals out to remote wireless devices.

This "relay station" or "repeater" approach saves wiring costs and helps to build wireless infrastructure by driving signals into even those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas where wireless coverage is spotty and cabling is impractical. The Range Expander is perfect to help cover large areas in multi-story homes, warehouse environments, public spaces, and wireless "Hot Spots" -- anywhere you need extra coverage for your wireless network.

Installation is a snap with the Range Expander's Auto Configuration button. Just plug it in and press the button. The Expander will find your wireless network and configure itself automatically.

The Wireless-G Range Expander works with most Wi-Fi certified access points and wireless routers. And it works in both Wireless-G and Wireless-B modes so you'll get the benefits of increased coverage even with a mixed network.

So, expand your wireless network's effective coverage the easy way, with the Wireless-G Range Expander.

  • The easiest way to expand your wireless network's coverage or extend the signal into hard-to-reach areas
  • Save on wiring costs -- no wired connection to your network necessary
  • Easy installation -- one-touch auto configuration
  • Compatible with both Wireless-G and Wireless-B networking devices

4 out of 5 stars Good unit, but doesn't work with iPhone   August 30, 2010
    C. Marcus
The unit set up OK. I followed the suggestions of previous reviewers, which were very good, and would add only one comment if you have WEP:

When you enable WEP on the expander, it appears to hang. Ignore that. Then enable WEP on your router (mine is WRT54G), and the expander completes its job.

Problems with iPhone: I got the expander for my PC laptop and my iPhone. It works fine with the Dell laptop, but the iPhone does not see the expander; it acts as if it is not there. It still sees the router signal, as weak as before the expander was installed. My iPhone is hardware v4, with iOS 4.02 (which is the latest). I upgraded the firmware on both the router and expander, and this did not help.

I just looked on Linksys (Cisco) website, and it is a known problem on the user forum:
    [...]
You can also use google and search with: "iphone WRE54G site:homecommunity.cisco.com".
I called Linksys, and the tech was of no help. I pointed her to the homecommunity place, which she did not seem to be aware of. She suggested changing to channel 11 (was on 6); changed it, but problem was not fixed.

2 out of 5 stars Works but flakey   August 25, 2010
    chriswei (Seattle, WA United States)
As other reviewers have noted, it is tough to set up. If you have set up other wireless products and have some patience, you'll get it done, but it is a pain.

However, once set up, it flakes out a lot. I have to power-cycle it almost every day. It will be working just fine one second and the next, I have full connection strength but no packets flowing through. I have set up a power strip under my desk so that I can power-cycle with a tap of my foot.

Perhaps there is a firmware update that solves the problem, but I haven't bothered to check.

5 out of 5 stars Third Time was a Charm!   August 23, 2010
    Paul H. Love (Duluth, MN)
This is the 3rd WRE54G I have installed in 8 weeks. The first two did not work at all. The 3rd WRE54G works wonderfully! Great product, have excellent wireless reception.

5 out of 5 stars It does the job, just follow these directions.   August 21, 2010
    Glynn Nichalson (Chipley, FL)
This can be a nightmare for those new to wireless networks. It can be extremely nerve racking, but with some patience it'll all come together. Follow these instructions and it should work for you too.

If you're having trouble setting it up, definitely call the 800 number as opposed to going online. I tried with three different people through their website online and none could help. Right before I sent it back I decided to try phone support and it got the expander a reprieve. I've copied some instructions that Y.A. Escalante was kind enough to leave in his review, but corrected and elaborated some of the items based on my experience. I would've given this 4 stars, but I deducted 1 for it not having clear enough instructions with its initial shipping. (Would've saved Linksys some headaches)

    Here goes:
1-Disable WEP on your Router or AP
2-Hold the auto-configuration button for 30 seconds(if everything goes well both lights on the expander will turn blue) and unplug while still holding button. Plug back in after 10-15 secs.
3-open your Internet explorer browser and type 192.168.1.240 (default ip of expander), a window will pop up. leave the user name blank and put admin as a password (this is default password).
4-make sure that the default gateway and subnet mask settings are identical with your Router or AP,change password on the expander if desired & save settings. (all settings should be correct due to auto configuration)
5-Enable WEP on the expander, once again remember use same settings as in your Router or AP, save settings again.
6-Go to your Router or Ap settings and enable WEP. Bang you're DONE. Enjoy

Hope this helps some of you...if not call the 800 number on the box and be patient.

Much thanks to the Anthony Taylor who posted this. Sometimes this doesn't seem to respond while connecting wireless. No problem, just connect through the ethernet cord provided. The installation cd is crap. I use it for a drink coaster;)

    1 out of 5 stars Difficult Diffcult Diffcult !   August 20, 2010
    Neo
    POor compatibility.

Instructions on the leaflet are poor.

Have not been able to set it up with my standard ATT 2 Wire modem. Have tried like a gazillion times.. more than 5 total hours spent.

Looking to return it. I think it has compabitibility issues with non link sys stuff.
